Graduate Trainee to Management Academy
The 2018 Management Academy programme at REED recently came to an end.
We caught up with Matt – a Senior Recruitment Consultant within Reed Scientific, and third-year member of the REED Graduate Scheme, to find out more about the programme and how it has helped his development.
Matt, in your own words what is REED’s Management Academy?
Enrolling on the Management Academy at REED is an incredible opportunity to develop skills and experience in the management of staff and all aspects of business.
For me. the course was a great opportunity to develop a network of colleagues to help with queries as a manager. It was a great course that I believe was a benefit to all my peers.
Why did you choose to apply for the programme?
I chose to apply as I was looking to develop further within the company; notably to pursue the management opportunities at REED. Specifically within my own office and specialism (Reed Scientific) I wanted to be able to assist in the development of new staff that joined us there.
As a member of the Graduate Training Scheme, I had previously completed the Future Leaders Programme [a dedicated course for Graduate Scheme members pursuing operational management routes at REED]. Completing this beforehand helped accelerate my application for the Management Academy.
I had also heard positive feedback from managers and colleagues within Reed about benefits associated with the programme.
Was the application process competitive? What did you need to do?
Yes it was competitive. I was fortunate to get on the course on the first time of applying.
For your application you have to receive support from your line manager (my Business Manager in my case) in addition to a Senior / Divisional Manager. You also need to provide a written application form and cover letter stating why you wanted to go on the programme and how it would benefit both REED and yourself.
If your application is successful up to this point, a personality profiling questionnaire is conducted to help determine the final delegates for the cohort.
What did the course cover?
All the key aspects of management including HR, training of staff, conducting staff reviews and appraisals; as well as the business aspects of the role such as financial and operational branch management, in addition to many more aspects.
What was the most important thing you learnt about yourself while on the programme?
To be more aware of how I may come across to my colleagues, and especially how important this is when in a senior / management role. Being more aware of yourself is crucial in helping to get the most out of your colleagues and Co-Members whilst also performing your role to the best of your ability.
What’s next for Matt?
Developing further into a management role within my own office while supporting the growth and development of new and existing staff in my division. I intend and hope to progress to Business Manager in the near future and further up the ladder in due course.
