Knowing yourself why you want to work in recruitment will make life a lot easier when asked the why recruitment interview question when businesses start responding to your applications.

We’ve spoken to recruiters across the REED group and picked out people’s three favourite factors of working in recruitment.


3 Key Benefits of Working in Recruitment

1. Responsibility from Day One

The majority of recruitment jobs in the UK are Recruitment Consultant positions in which you are responsible for your own recruitment ‘patch’ – i.e. recruiting in a specific geographic location for roles in a certain industry.

For example you may recruit qualified accountants for interim vacancies in Kent, or supply candidates to permanent scientific lab roles in Manchester.

Whatever specialism you choose / end up working in, you will have lead or joint responsibility for growing business in that area. With support and training from your employer, and a can-do attitude and willingness to learn, you can soon become an expert in your industry.


2. Career Progression – Regardless of Background

While recruitment is not always straight forward, it does not require you to have any specific qualifications when applying. However, it is worth researching options with potential employers though as starting salaries and programme structures may vary depending on your experience level.

For example, at REED we have the following entry routes:

  • Apprenticeships – for anyone with no prior experience seeking permanent employment
  • Internships – 12 weeks of work experience in a recruitment office (often leading to further employment)
  • Placement Year schemes for undergraduates in our operational business areas and technology teams
  • An (Award-Winning) Graduate Scheme – a 3 year rotational programme for graduates who have achieved a 2.1 undergraduate degree classification or higher
  • Experience hires – direct entry to vacancies where more experienced recruiters could be an asset.

3. Rewards for Results

Recruitment consultants are frequently rewarded financially and with progression opportunities as a direct result of the outcomes they achieve in their work.

A Permanents Consultant at REED who fills a client vacancy will have agreed a fee for that placement in advance, from which the consultant will earn a percentage as a bonus for that period. The more placements they successfully make, the more bonus they earn on top of their fixed salary that month.

At REED (and likely at other businesses) each division uses a Career Development Framework, which will see your job role seniority, and your basic salary increase when specific targets are hit over six-month (or similar) time frames.

The Why Recruitment Interview Question:

How to Answer

So you’ve made it to an interview for a job in recruitment. Chances are you will be asked the question “why have you applied for this role / company?” or simply you might be asked “why recruitment?”

So what’s the ideal response?

There will never be a perfect one-size-fits-all answer to this questions as every role, business and hiring manager will differ. However, following the three principles below should help you shape a solid response:


  1. Be Honest
  2. Do Your Research
  3. Demonstrate You Are Results-Driven


Being honest with yourself about your reasons is the first step, and you will likely need to divulge this information to the employer in some form before the interview stage. Wanting to earn good amounts of money is an acceptable motivator to talk about – as long as it is not the sole reason.

Researching your employer is key to any interview situation. Explore the background of the interviewers using LinkedIn, ask questions on the phone beforehand, explore their careers websites, staff testimonials and Glassdoor reviews. All of this should help give you a feel for the type of person the business is looking for and the values of the company and its staff.

Demonstrating you understand the results-driven nature of recruitment is very important to interviewers as they need to see you know recruitment jobs can be very challenging at times and require a lot of positivity, hard work and resilience. Use examples of how you have demonstrated your results-driven nature through a challenging time and you will be sure to make an impact on the interviewer.
